SPE / ICoTA - Short Courses

26 March 2018
Waterway Marriott, The Woodlands, TX

Courses will be held in conjunction with the SPE/ICoTA Coiled Tubing and Well Intervention Conference and Exhibition.

Introduction to Coiled Tubing
Instructor: Ed Smalley, NOV CTES

Register for this course.

CEUs .8 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) will be awarded for this 1-day course.

The course will provide participants with a basic knowledge of coiled tubing operations and the equipment utilized to deploy it in the field. It will highlight key pre-job design parameters required for successful field operations.

The following topics will be addressed in this course:

  • Introduction to surface equipment required to deploy coiled tubing during field operations
  • Basic understanding of coiled tubing pre-job modeling and fatigue tracking - - and why it’s important
  • Challenges associated with use of coiled tubing on extended-reach wells and techniques for addressing those challenges
  • Coiled tubing modeling software will be utilized to identify and address potential pre-job design issues
Why Attend?
The course will provide participants with a basic knowledge of coiled tubing operations and the equipment utilized to deploy it in the field. It will highlight key pre- job design parameters required for successful field operations. Participants will also have the opportunity to utilize coiled tubing modeling software during the course to better understand the impact of changing field job parameters on the outcome of the field operation. Who Should Attend?

Engineers and others with six months or less experience that are involved in the design of coiled tubing equipment or use of coiled tubing field services.

Learning Objectives
This introductory course will provide an understanding of the surface equipment and key job design parameters required for successful coiled tubing field operations.

Rigless Intervention Best Practices for Coiled Tubing, Slickline, and Wireline
Instructor: Todd Green, Aramco and Ron Zbitowsky, Aramco

Register for this course.

CEUs .8 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) will be awarded for this 1-day course.

This short course is designed to provide knowledge and understanding of surface equipment, downhole tools, various applications, and operational contingencies for rigless well interventions involving coiled tubing, slickline, or wireline.  The participants will learn first-hand knowledge of the capability of each intervention and what to consider when choosing which intervention method to utilize.  The course will cover recommended risk mitigation and well control barriers as well as best practices gained from years of experience and application.  To further illustrate the intervention methods utilized to resolve well issues or enhance well performance, real world examples for coiled tubing, slickline and wireline will be presented and discussed.

Upon completion of this short course, the participants will be able to:

  • Recognize and explain function of CT, Slickline, and wireline equipment
  • Recognize and explain function of the Pressure Control Equipment and Bottom-hole assembly’s for coiled tubing, slickline and wireline interventions.
  • Identify common applications for coiled tubing, slickline, wireline interventions
  • Assess the pros and cons of each intervention and evaluate which intervention type to utilizes for various job problems
  • Identify and describe critical job design considerations for each job type of intervention that should be present in a contractor proposal
  • Discuss risks associated with each each type of intervention and the corresponding mitigation controls recommended for each job type.
  • Enhance rigless intervention safety, efficiency, and success by applying industry best practices and lessons learned for each job type.
Why Attend?
Poorly understood and inefficiently planned rigless interventions can create costly, and often dangerous, problems for operators. These issues can be avoided with the knowledge, best practices, and lessons provided in this short course.

Attendees of this course will benefit from the increased knowledge of rigless, live well interventions including coiled tubing, slickline, and wireline. In addition, course attendees will review engineering design considerations, recommended safety policies, and best practices that can positively affect operations.

Who Should Attend?
This course is designed for engineers, senior operations personnel, and company representatives with zero-to-intermediate well intervention knowledge who are assigned to evaluate, plan, and/or execute coiled tubing, slickline, or wireline interventions.

One of SPE's most popular annual events returns to The Woodlands, Texas in 2018. The SPE/ICoTA Coiled Tubing and Well Intervention Conference and Exhibition will offer top-notch technical sessions, informative speakers, Knowledge Sharing ePoster presentations, special events, and training courses.

This conference will cover innovative solutions, case histories, and performance improvements across all sectors of the well intervention industry, including:

  • Coiled tubing
  • Wireline and tractor
  • Hydraulic workover/snubbing
  • Pumping services

General themes to be covered include technology and applications, offshore as well as onshore operations, and HSE. In the light of current industry challenges, we will be encouraging a special focus on increasing operations efficiency, reducing non-productive time, and performing cost effective well abandonment.

Experts will share their knowledge on the performance and effectiveness of well intervention and coiled tubing options through presentations, training courses, and an exhibition of services and products. Attendee participation in the conference is the key to its success. Mark your calendar and make plans now to participate in this important industry event!
