Coiled Tubing Glossary...

Lamellated: composed of or furnished with lamellae (thin plates composing the gills of a bivalve mollusk). Lamellated materials, such as mica and cellophane flakes, are used as cement additives to restore lost circulation.

Laminar Flow: The linear motion of a fluid.

Lease: The area where production wells, tanks, separators, and other productions equipment are located.

Lift Frame: A frame used to connect the injector head to a wellhead or test tree on a floating rig.

Lignosulfonate: an organic drilling fluid additive derived from by-products of a paper-making process using sulfite; added to drilling mud to minimize fluid loss and to reduce the viscosity of the mud.

Limestone: A sedimentary rock rich in calcium carbonate that sometimes serves as a reservoir rock for petroleum.

Limited Entry: A method of treating an entire zone or multiple production zones ensuring complete coverage of the zone or zones of interest.

Line: Any length of pipe through which liquid or gas is pumped through.

Liner Lap: The distance that a liner extends into the bottom of a string of casing.

Liner: Any string of casing whose top is located below the surface.

Lobe Pattern: In a PDM motor the Stator consists of a series of internal spiral grooves in a rubber molding. The Rotor consists of a series of external spiral grooves on a coated steel shaft. The ratio of the rotor grooves to stator grooves is the Lobe Pattern. The higher the ratio, the better the motor (usually).

Location: The place where a well is drilled.

Long String: The last string of casing run in a well. 2. The string of casing that is set through the production zone. Often called the production casing.

Loss Circulation Material: A substance added to drilling mud or cement slurries to prevent the loss of the fluid to the formation.

Lost Circulation: the loss of quantities of whole mud to a formation, usually in cavernous, fissured, or coarsely permeable beds, evidenced by the complete or partial failure of the mud to return to the surface as it is being circulated in the hole. Lost circulation can lead to a blowout and in general reduce the efficiency of the drilling operation. It is also called "lost returns".

Lost Returns: (see lost circulation).

Low-pressure Squeeze Cementing: the forcing of cement into the points in a well to be squeezed at a pressure not exceeding the formation break-down pressure.

Lubricator: A specially fabricated length of casing or tubing usually placed temporarily above a valve on the casing head or tubing head. It is used to run tools into a producing well and provides a method for sealing off pressure and thus should be rated for the highest anticipated pressure.
