Kelly: The heavy steel member, four or six sided, suspended from the swivel through the rotary table and connected to the top-most joint of drill pipe. Used to turn the drill stem as the rotary table turns. It has a bored passageway that permits fluids to be circulated through it. Kick Off: To deviate a wellbore from the vertical. Kick: Intrusion of formation liquids or gas that results in an increase in pit volume or an increase in observed wellhead pressure. It occurs when the pressure of the column of fluid in the wellbore is not great enough to overcome the formation pressure. Kill Line: A high-pressure line between the pumps and some point below a well control component. This line allows fluids to be pumped into the well or annulus with the well control component close Kill: To overcome formation pressure with heavier fluids. Allowing work to be done on the well.
