Coiled Tubing Glossary...

Darcy: A unit of measure for permeability

Data Key: The security control for CIRCA. To access CIRCA a key has to be used. Each issue of CIRCA has a unique key which is not interchangeable.

Defect: A defect is an imperfection of sufficient magnitude to warrant rejection of the product.

Densify: to reduce or decrease the amount of mixing water in a slurry from normal to less than normal.

Density: The weight of a substance per unit volume.

Diameter: The distance across a circle measured through the center.

Diametrical Growth: Change in the diameter of the tubing.

Diamond Matrix: A term used to describe a particular type of bit.

Diatom (diatomaceous): 1) a microscopic plant that lives in water. 2) dry land covered with a thick layer of diatom skeletons; this kind of earth is used for making dynamite and as a cement additive.

Differential Fill-Up Collar: A device used in setting casing. It is run near the bottom of the casing to automatically admit fluid into the casing as needed so it sinks rather than floats into the well.

Differential Fill-Up Shoe: A device similar to a differential fill-up collar, except it is run on the bottom of the casing and is incorporated into the guide shoe.

Differential Pressure: The difference between two fluid pressures at the point where they are linked together.

Dimple Connector: A tubing connector using grub screws to secure BHA's to the coiled tubing.

Dispersant: cement additive that reduces the initial consistency of cement slurries.

Displacement: The volume of fluid needed to fill a given number of linear feet of tubulars.

DMUR: Drilling, Milling and Under-Reaming

Dolomite: A type of sedimentary rock similar to limestone but rich in magnesium carbonate, sometimes a reservoir rock for petroleum.

Dongle: A computing term for a Data Key.

Downhole: Pertaining to the wellbore.

Drag: Friction between a moving device (such as coiled tubing) and another moving or non moving part (such as tubing or formation walls).

Drilling Fluid: any substance, such as air or gas, water or oil base muds, circulated in a well during drilling operations.

Dry Blending: process of admixing finely divided solid compounds.
