Abandon: To cease producing oil or gas from a well when it becomes unprofitable to produce.

Accelerator: A chemical that reduces the setting time of a cement slurry.

Accumulator Precharge: An initial nitrogen charge in an accumulator which is further compressed when the hydraulic fluid is pumped into the accumulator storing potential energy.

Accumulator: A pressure vessel charged with nitrogen gas and used to store hydraulic fluid under pressure for operation of pressure control equipment.

Acid Fracture: To open cracks in productive hard-limestone formations by using a combination of acid and oil or acid and water under high pressure.

Acid Treatment: A method by which petroleum bearing formations are put into contact with an acid to enlarge the pore spaces and passages through which the reservoir fluids flow.

Acre-foot: A unit of volume often used in reservoir analysis, equivalent to the volume of fluid necessary to cover one acre to a depth of one foot.

Additive: A substance or compound added in small amounts to a larger volume of another substance to change some characteristic of the latter.

Admix: to add one material to another by mixing.

Alkali: any base or hydroxide having the following properties: (1) solubility in water, (2) the power of neutralizing acids, and (3) the property of altering the tint of many coloring matters.

American Petroleum Institute: the leading standardizing organization on oil field drilling and producing equipment; abbreviated API.

Anchor: Any device that secures of fastens equipment so it cannot move.

Annular space: The space around a pipe in a wellbore, sometimes called the annulus, the outer wall of which may be the wall of either the casing or the hole.

AW Rod Thread: A parallel thread with three threads per inch (3 TPI) similar to the BW THREAD. The thread is square cut and is used in applications of 1.75" OD thread or less.
